Visiting big, modern cities show us latest fashion and makeup trends. Just like in Seoul, which is of course known as the capital of our country. It is always a pleasant experience for me for the reason that it is always amazing to see skyscrapers and pretty, stylish women in the city center.

The joy of traveling in big cities is dynamic, but I want to get out of the hustle and bustle place once in a while for me to be in a quiet and relaxed atmosphere and to get a better understanding of our old Korean culture. I was able to get away from modernity one time when I visited Ganghwa County and I was able to witness a great architectural marvel.
The Ganghwa Anglican Cathedral is a historical place and show history of Catholicism when it was introduced in Korea way back 1890. It is not the usual architectural style of cathedrals that is well known throughout the world. Rather, it has a traditional Hanok style (Korean traditional architecture) and it shows a very unique church of Basilica form.

It is said that the building was built by Dopyeonsoo (a master builder title) who participated in the construction of Gyeongbok Palace without any design plan. The outside of the construction looks like a Korean traditional architecture, but the structure and interior followed the style of a Basilica, especially the cross placed on the rooftop that attracted my attention.
When you enter the cathedral, you will have the distinct feeling of the well-combined traditional Korean exterior and Western interior.

Tourist attractions in the suburbs of Ganghwa are renowned for its magnificent Onsuri Cathedral and the Sacred Heart Cathedral.
The Ganghwa Anglican Cathedral uses the temple bell as a kind of in the church bells (Church species) using the structure of a building unique to Korea.
Showing the history of the Catholic Church in Korea to the public was made possible by displaying the old images of the cathedral both inside the church’s gallery and the cathedral itself.

Right around the area, there is a house where King Cheoljong lived during the Joseon Dynasty.
In fact, there was also a drama about King Cheoljong, acted by Choi Shu Jong which was called the "500 years of the Joseon Dynasty".
So, it is also good to check it out for a more immersed experience in the county and of the history.

경기도 가볼만한 곳 1 - 특별한 장소 강화성당
내가 사는 지역은 서울 근교라서 가끔은 대도시가 그리울때가 있다. 서울을 갈때마다 높은 빌딩과 예쁘고 세련된 여자들을 보면 매번 즐겁다. 서울과 같은 대도시 여행의 즐거움은 역동성을 느낄 수 있다는 것이다. 우리나라 여자들의 패션과 화장 트렌드는 이미 유명해져서 더 이상 새로울 것도 없다.하지만 서울과 같은 대도시의 삶이 조금 지쳤다면 근교의 자연을 느끼고 싶은게 사람 마음이다. 한적하고 여유로운 한옥의 멋을 느끼고 싶은 여행. 지난번 다녀온 강화성당이 바로 그런 곳이었다.
몇 번 강화도 주말여행을 다녀봤지만 강화성당은 처음이었다. 한국전통가옥의 모습을 그대로 간직한채 성당의 바실리코 양식이 결합된 독특한 한국초기 성당의 모습을 갖고 있는 곳이라 한국에 사는 외국인이든, 한국인이든 모두에게 추천하고 싶은 여행장소였다.

강화성당(Ganghwa Anglican Cathedral)은 서울에서 가깝고, 1890년에 한국에 들어온 천주교의 역사를 그대로 보여주는 역사적인 장소이다.
흔히 아는 성당의 고유양식의 건축이 아니라 전통적인 한옥의 모습을 그대로 지니고 있어서 아주 독특한 선교교회의 모습을 보여준다. 건축은 경복궁 중건에 참여한 도편수(목수의 우두머리)가 설계도 없이 그냥 지은 건물이라는 이야기가 전해진다.
외부구조는 한옥처럼 보이지만 내부는 바실리카 양식을 따랐다고 하는데 기와지붕에 십자가를 올린 모양이 눈길을 끈다. 서울 근교 여행지 강화도는 강화온수리성당과 청주성공회성당이 유명하다.
강화성당은 한국특유의 건물구조를 사용해서 교회종(Church species)이 마치 절에 있는 종처럼 범종을 사용한다. 성당의 옛 모습을 사진으로 내부에 전시해 놔서 성당안으로 들어가면 한국천주교회의 역사를 볼 수 있다.
한옥으로는 꽤 큰 규모이지만 성당이라는 측면에서 보면 아담한 느낌을 준다. 성당안으로 들어가면 한국특유의 전통적인 모습과 서양의 모습이 아주 독특한 인상을 준다.

서울여행도 좋지만 전통적이면서 좀 특이한 다른 곳을 가보고 싶다면 꼭 추천하고 싶은 곳이다. 한국인인 내가 보기에도 이국적이면서 한국적이어서 인상에 깊이 남는 곳이었다.
바로 주변에는 조선시대의 철종이 기거했던 집이 남아 있어서 함께 둘러보기 좋다. 철종에 대한 드라마도 있었는데 최수종이 철종역을 맡았고 "조선왕조 오백년"이라는 드라마였다. 지금 이 드라마는 쉽게 찾아볼 수 없다. 어릴때 부모님과 함께 본 조선왕조 오백년 열혈시청했던 기억이 난다.
